24 year old Jacob Mellis has become David Flitcroft’s fourth signing of the summer this week.

The midfielder was with Blackpool last season and following his release by them, he has now signed a two year deal at Gigg Lane.

Having come through the ranks at Sheffield United, he made a £1million move to Premier League Chelsea in the summer of 2007 and he was part of the side that reached the FA Youth Cup final in 2008.

In 2012 he left Stamford Bridge and headed to Barnsley and Oakwell under Keith Hill, ably assisted by Flicker at the time.

He left them following their relegation to League One however.

Speaking to the Official Site our gaffer said of the capture.

‘I have brought Jacob to the Club as I feel he fits perfectly into the vision we have for our team on the pitch and into the new DNA profile for a Bury player. Jacob has not yet reached his potential and it is our aim and desire to give him a home where he can fulfil that.’

Flitcroft went on to say that he believes in the coming years Mellis will prove himself able to both create opportunities in front of the net, but also take them and he feels his overall style will aide our attacking play.

‘I worked with Jacob at Barnsley where he was an instrumental player in helping us stay in the Championship. In the time I worked with him we built a very good relationship based on trust, and I believe that this was a major factor in Jacob coming to Bury. The environment which we have created here will suit Jacob`s needs. We have an outstanding support infrastructure here at Bury, not only with the staff but also with the players. We have players here who will have a major impact on Jacob`s future both on and off the pitch.’

Mellis comes in with over 100 career appearances under his belt so far, with over 50 of them during his time at Barnsley, and he’s so far scored ten times.
