Manager David Flitcroft has highlighted the need for Bury to be clinical in front of the net from all areas of the pitch this League One season.

With the somewhat bizarre Doncaster opener behind us now, Flitcroft explained to the Official Site that he wanted everyone on the pitch to chip in with their fair share of goals over the coming year as he doesn’t want us to just rely on the forward line.

‘It`s got to be a multi-scoring team, we had it last season, but we maybe didn`t get as many goals as I wanted. We have got to score from different angles around the pitch and hurt teams from all angles, and I think we can do that with the two full-backs we`ve got, mixed with the energy they have to get forward and the creativity in the team.’

With Danny Mayor being the League Two Player of the Season for 2014-15 and our promotion year, the gaffer also laid down a new challenge to him – become the best player in League One this time round.

‘It`s my job and responsibility to make Danny Mayor the best player in League One, he absolutely blitzed it in League Two last season. I really think it`s our responsibility to now task Danny to become the best player in this League and on that showing I think he can be.’

Following the Doncaster performance, Leon Clarke and Jacob Mellis also came in for special praise from the manager.

‘Leon Clarke looked a threat all afternoon, and just barring hitting the woodwork a couple of times he`s got a few goals. Jacob Mellis gave us a different threat when he came on, obviously he`s not ready for the 90 minutes yet because of his interruptive pre-season, but he gives us that end quality.’

With the obvious controversy standing out from the game late on as Forrester shanked a back pass to the keeper into the net, before opposite number Paul Dickov gave the instruction to level the scores to make it fair, Flicker went on again to praise Dickov’s actions and sportsmanship but also pointed out that with so many rules and regulations in the game now, surely that kind of moment – however rare – could be more easily dealt with.

‘What I witnessed today shouldn`t happen in the professional game anymore, we are all professionals who have put six weeks planning into the game. Therefore we need a fair and equal chance to win the game, but I`ve seen someone in Paul Dickov who I have the ultimate respect for. My respect levels for him are now higher than they were before, if that was possible. Where the referee has got it totally wrong, he`s put football in a good place.’

The referee didn’t however have a choice under the rules of the game, and that could be very easily addressed.
