Well it was certainly an eventful opening day to the League One season when we faced Doncaster Rovers at the Keepmoat Stadium on Saturday – well in one respect anyway.

By now everyone has seen the ‘walk the ball’ into the net equaliser, and speaking to the BBC after the game manager David Flitcroft was full of praise for the actions of opposite number Paul Dickov as he agreed to level up scores after a bit of a shank from Forrester who was trying to kick the ball back to our keeper.

‘Paul put football in a good place with his sportsmanship. Because if you lose morality the game has no substance for me. I’ve got the ultimate respect for Paul Dickov. He tried to get the referee to award a foul throw initially but then he’s allowed us to score from the restart.’

Dickov himself said of the freak moment late on at the death of the game that he really didn’t have to think twice in his decision because it just wouldn’t have been right or proper for Doncaster to gain the advantage in that way as they were trying to give the ball back after it had been put out for an injury.

‘I didn’t really think twice about allowing them to equalise. It just wouldn’t have been right for us to take three points in the circumstances. It was just an unfortunate ending to the game. Harry Forrester hit the ball too sweet and I was just hoping it wouldn’t go in. When it did we just had to allow them to score because you can’t win a game like that.’

Not a moment you see often in football at all, but a suitable ending to the game where our hosts come out with an incredible amount of respect for their actions.
