Kevin Blackwell has said that Dagenham and Redbridge simply showed more desire than we did during the 90 minutes in our two one loss to them yesterday.

Dagenham led for the entire second half and Bury could only muster a consolation goal from Forrester in the dying deaths of the game.

Speaking to the Official Site following the loss, the gaffer explained that he’d spoken to the seniors in the squad after the match and they held their hands up in admitting they weren’t on the ball enough and didn’t do enough to lead the youngsters on the day, so it’s a case of must try harder again when we move forward with our next match.

‘In the first half Dagenham and Redbridge had one shot on target and it went in. We were comfortable, but we just didn’t do enough.’

Blackwell says he really feels that if we’d opened up and gone for it in the final third of the pitch and attacked with some intent he believes we’d have taken the victory without too much bother at all, as it was our failure to perform that was the difference over the 90.

‘At no point throughout the game did Dagenham have us under any real pressure. The frustration is that Trevor Carson hardly had a save to make.’

The major disappointment is that lack of a killer instinct in the final third has been a problem for Bury over the last few weeks, and the manager puts it down to a lack of desire and ambition. He feels the players have maybe become a little bit contented with their improvement so far given the changes at the club over the summer, and now too many have stepped off and aren’t pushing themselves as they should to improve further.

It’s about a balance for Blackwell though as he’s going to demand more from the seniors, but try to keep the pressure off others.

‘It seems as though they’re resting on their laurels, that is why I need to try and shake it up a bit. I’m still wary of putting pressure on players that aren’t quite ready.’

The positives are there for him though, it’s just about finding that next gear to be the very best we can at this stage, as he knows we should have more points on the board already and should be further away from the dropzone even at this early stage of the season.
